Company Overview

They are an incredibly well-known name in the UK, famous for being one of the biggest food and non-food retailers in the country. Asda has a significant market presence, with around 633 stores nationwide and plans for further expansion.

In order to operate these stores effectively, Asda recruits regularly in the UK. The company currently employs around 200,000 staff and looks certain to increase in line with the company’s expansion plans. This means that Asda is always looking to recruit staff at the store, head office and warehouse levels.

With such enormous financial backing, Asda’s future within the UK retail sector looks bright and makes it an appealing place to work.

Why choose a career with Asda?

Asda has long been an attractive employer for many job seekers, both at a senior managerial level right down to the junior, shop floor level. This is perhaps because Asda prides itself on having a positive culture amongst employees, which encourages new approaches, fresh ideas, team spirit and a sense of family regardless of position. Career development is also possible with an employer the size of Asda and there is a range of training schemes, both formal and informal which are open to staff. Asda believes that one way to grow the business is to grow the talent from within, so if you are looking for an organisation with which you can progress and showcase your talents then Asda may be the ideal employer for you.

Benefits

In addition to the career development achievable with Asda, prospective employees have also been attracted to the organisation thanks to the rewards and benefits on offer. Asda pays all staff a competitive rate of pay for the position they are working in and also rewards staff with a 10% in-store reduction on their shopping after 12 weeks of employment (with Tesco it is 12 months). Asda also rewards staff with on-the-spot prizes, such as flowers, a CD or cash for any good ideas that are successfully implemented. Employees who have worked continuously for 6 months are invited to join the company’s share plan and become shareholders. For those looking towards the future, Asda invites all staff to join the company’s contributory pension scheme and life assurance of up to four times basic pay is also provided.

Although many people work purely for financial gain it is worth considering the non-financial rewards that can be offered by an organisation. Non-financial rewards can help create a better work/life balance and make the employee more motivated and loyal to the organisation. Asda recognises this and has a number of non-financial rewards which are offered to all staff, such as time off (unpaid) for a family emergency for up to eight weeks, and 3 hours of time off on the morning of your child’s first day at school. Maternity pay is provided to women for up to 52 weeks and new fathers can take up to three months off work (unpaid) with their new baby as part of the Asda paternity leave scheme.

An employer like Asda employs a diverse range of people on a diverse range of contracts, from full-time to part-time and seasonal, all staff are employed on merit, not sex, race or religion. Asda also prides itself on offering work to people with disabilities and has been recognised for this by the Job Centre network.

How to Apply

All you need to do is to visit the dedicated career site for the retail giant and start searching for recent positions. With such a vast number of stores, it is perhaps little surprise to learn that most of Asda’s employees work within a store. To apply for an in-store job you should contact your nearest store for details, as this is where jobs are advertised. The company only accepts online applications so there are no printed application forms and you can not apply within the stores.

You will be expected to complete an application test, which is used to gain an understanding of your abilities, intelligence and knowledge base. The test also seeks to understand the applicant on a personal level and how you see yourself as an individual.

Asda in-store Managers are expected to submit their application form via the Asda website, and as with Asda House head office vacancies, you can search for Managerial positions online and also request notification of suitable jobs which become available in the future. The application for Asda Pharmacy staff is also to be made via the Asda website, submitting an application form online.
