Retail Supervisor Job Description

Retail Supervisors will typically allocate work to team members and draw up rotas for the week or fortnight.

A common way to become a Retail Supervisor is to be promoted after 1-2 years of experience in the retail industry. You will need to have demonstrated that you are committed in your role and have a passion for retail and that you want the business to be a success. Candidates will also need to demonstrate confidence and people skills, as a Retail Supervisor is likely to be responsible for a team of Retail Assistants.

Job Description

A Retail Supervisor is involved with the training and mentoring of new team members, and monitors and reports on team performance to the Retail Manager. A Retail Supervisor will also need to keep up to date with regulations and be fully up to speed with company policies and the latest promotions and campaigns within the store. A Retail Supervisor will also handle customer enquiries and complaints.

Working Hours

The working hours range from 35-40 hours per week, and weekend work is expected. Shift work is common and this may change on a weekly or fortnightly basis depending on rotas. Part time work is usually available.

Skills and Training Development

Management training courses are usually available for Retail Assistants to become Retail Supervisors, or for Retail Supervisors to gain further knowledge for their career development. NVQ qualifications are available in Team Leading and Management, and there are also qualifications through the Chartered Management Institute.

Retail Supervisors are customers facing so individuals in this position are expected to display excellent customer service skills and the willingness to assist the customer. Supervisors will need to be open, friendly and approachable with great communication skills. It is likely that a Retail Supervisor will need to deal with issues relating to individual team members, so sensitivity and the ability to empathise will be key but also a strong confident approach to leadership so that the team are continuously motivated. Aspiring Retail Supervisors will need to show that they want the business to succeed and demonstrate commercial awareness, and show excellent multi-tasking skills.

Salary

The salary of a Retail Supervisor is usually between £15,000 and £25,000 per year depending on location and experience. A new Retail Supervisor can expect to earn between £15,000 – £18,000 a year and somebody with experience can expect to earn between £18,000 – £25,000. Salaries are likely to be higher in bigger cities such as London.
