A Merchandiser’s job is to ensure that the appropriate products in sufficient quantity are available in the right store or online website at the right time. Therefore a Merchandiser must work closely with other teams, including advertising and purchasing departments, to forecast future demand to prepare necessary stock levels, and revise plans if the predictions are inaccurate.
Within this role is the task of budget setting and number of lines or variety of stock that should be purchased, then the purchasing team selects the lines and makes the orders. It is often the case that small companies include the merchandiser’s role within the purchasing department, or even a single individual undertakes both tasks.
Merchandisers have a vital role within the company as the correct prediction or product demand, and buying the stock at the right price before the demand is higher than the stock you hold in hand, has a significant impact on the profitability of an organisation.
A successful merchandiser will have a lot of experience, and it is unlikely you will be offered this position unless you have experience. However entry-level positions include allocators, distributors and merchandise administrative assistants (MAA). Other roles within the purchasing department may also lead to merchandising positions.
