As a customer services assistant you will need to keep customers happy. This means that in your cover letter you will need to show that you can do this. You may need to be involved in dealing with them face to face, by email, letter or over the phone and so need to show that you have the appropriate skills for whichever will be relevant to you.
You will need to like helping people and so if you can highlight this in your cover letter this will be good. Show that you are tactful, polite and friendly. You may have to deal with complaints as well and this can be difficult, so if you have had experience of this in the past, then it will be useful to refer to it.
You may need numeracy and IT skills as well and so if these are mentioned in the job description, then draw attention to any that you have.
Although qualifications may not be asked for, if you have an NVQ in customer service, then make sure that you mention this as it will certainly go in your favour.

Dear Mrs Smith
Position of Customer Services Assistant
In my previous job, I spent two years working in a customer services department at a building society. This involved answering the telephone to customers and resolving their queries and problems. There was also some email work too. Some customers were easier to deal with than others but my training and natural tact and politeness helped me to successfully help all of them.
I used a computer database to access customer details and also did a selection of company specific software training courses while in the job. I was quick to learn and therefore feel confident in dealing with other IT systems.
During my two years of work, I studied for an NVQ in customer services and have now completed level 2 and am planning to move on to level 3 when the new course starts.
I have included my CV for your consideration and hope to hear back from you soon.
We hope that this letter example is useful for you. All you need to do is to amend it as suitable and use it for your job applications.
